How do I report an online scam in Ghana?

Call your bank or mobile money provider first so they can try to stop the money, then report it to the Ghana Police Service and ask for it to go to the Cybercrime Unit. You can also report it to the Cyber Security Authority, and report investment scams to the SEC.

Reporting matters even if the amount is small: it helps the bank, the mobile money provider, the platform and the police, and it can link your case to others by the same scammer. The Cyber Security Authority collects reports of cybercrime and fraud.

Step by step

  1. Call your bank or mobile money provider straight away. If you sent mobile money or a bank transfer, report it as fraud and ask them to try to stop the money in the wallet or account that received it.
  2. Keep everything: screenshots of the chats, the profile, the number, the MoMo or bank account details, the payment messages and links.
  3. Report it to the Ghana Police Service at your nearest police station. Explain that it's online fraud and ask for it to be referred to the Cybercrime Unit. Take your evidence, with dates and amounts, and write down the reference number.
  4. Give the reference number to your bank or mobile money provider.
  5. You can also report the scam to the Cyber Security Authority.
  6. If it was an investment scam, report it to the SEC. Report the profile on the platform where you chatted.
