What are the signs of a romance scam in Uganda?
The clearest sign is a request for money, airtime or mobile money before you have ever met. Before that there is usually a pattern: strong feelings very fast, a reason they cannot meet and excuses not to video call.
Romance scammers follow a script. They find you on a dating app, Facebook, Instagram or TikTok, move the chat to WhatsApp and message every day until you feel close. Then a problem appears that only your money can solve.
One sign alone is not proof. It is the combination, and above all the money, that gives it away.
Signs to look for
- They talk about love or marriage within days.
- They work somewhere hard to reach: abroad, on a ship, with the army, on a mission.
- Video calls never happen, or are very short and dark.
- Their photos look professional and the profile is new.
- Sooner or later they need money, airtime or a mobile money payment.
Frequently asked questions
- We have chatted for months. Can it still be a scam?
- Yes. Scammers invest months in one person because the payoff is bigger. The length of the chat says nothing about whether the person is real.
