Veritaza

I sent mobile money to a scammer. What do I do right now?

Call your provider's customer care straight away and report the transaction as fraud, giving the number and transaction ID. Then report it at the nearest police station and give your provider the police reference number.

The first minutes and hours matter. If the money has not been withdrawn, the provider may be able to hold it. Waiting makes it more likely the money is gone.

Do not pay anyone who calls offering to "recover" your money. That is often a second scam.

Right now

  1. Call MTN or Airtel customer care from the official number.
  2. Give the transaction ID, amount, time and receiving number.
  3. Take screenshots of the chat and payment messages.
  4. Report it at the nearest police station of the Uganda Police Force.
  5. Give the police reference to your provider.

Frequently asked questions

Someone says they can get my money back for a fee. Should I pay?
No. Recovery offers that ask for money up front are a common second scam.
