How do I spot a fake dating profile?

A fake profile usually has very few photos, all of them professional-looking, a short or generic bio, and a story that keeps the person far away: working abroad, in the army, widowed with a child. The rush to leave the app and the first request for money confirm it.

Fake profiles are built to appeal to as many people as possible, so they are vague on purpose. Real profiles have ordinary photos, friends, a messy background and details you can ask about.

What to check

  1. Reverse image search the photos. Stolen photos are the most common sign.
  2. Read the bio for copied phrases: paste a sentence into Google in quotes.
  3. Look at the distance and the location: a profile "in Johannesburg" that is always abroad is a sign.
  4. Ask for a photo with a gesture you choose, or a short video call, before you give your number.
  5. Check the number once you have it: country, virtual or not, and whether it appears on scam lists.

Frequently asked questions

Does a verified badge on the app mean the profile is real?
It means someone passed the app's selfie check at some point. It is a good sign, not proof.
