Why do I keep getting WhatsApp messages from unknown international numbers?
These messages are sent in bulk to lists of numbers, often by scam call centres, to find people who reply. A reply tells them the number is active and that you are willing to chat, and the job offer, romance or investment pitch follows.
Your number may have been in a data leak, on a group you joined or simply guessed by a program. It is not personal. The ones that start with "sorry, wrong number" are the most common opening for romance and crypto scams.
What to do
- Do not reply, not even to say "wrong number".
- Block and report the number inside WhatsApp; this also helps WhatsApp remove the account.
- In WhatsApp privacy settings, limit who can add you to groups and who can see your profile photo.
- Never click a link in such a message.
- If one of them turns into a conversation, check the number and the photos before you trust anything.
Frequently asked questions
- Is my phone hacked?
- No. Receiving messages does not mean anyone has access to your phone.
