How can I check who a phone number belongs to before I send mobile money?
When you send MoMo, the confirmation screen shows the name registered on the wallet: read it before you approve. If it does not match the person or business, stop.
Scammers often use wallets registered to someone else. A different name on the screen is one of the clearest warning signs you can get for free.
You can also search the number online and on Veritaza, which checks scam lists, whether the number is virtual and how often others have checked it.
Before you approve
- Read the registered name on the confirmation screen.
- Ask why it is different if it does not match.
- Search the number together with 'scam'.
- Check the number on Veritaza.
- Prefer cash on delivery or meeting in person for new contacts.
Frequently asked questions
- The seller says the wallet belongs to their cousin. Is that okay?
- It is a common excuse. Be careful, especially if you are paying in advance.
