How can I tell if an M-Pesa message is fake?

A real M-Pesa message comes from the official M-PESA sender, not from an ordinary phone number. The only sure check is your M-Pesa balance or statement in the M-Pesa menu or app.

Fake messages copy the wording of real ones, including transaction codes and balances. They are often followed by a call asking you to send the money back or hand over goods quickly.

Screenshots are even easier to fake than SMS messages, so never treat one as proof.

How to check

  1. Look at the sender: M-PESA, not a 07 or 01 number.
  2. Check your balance or mini statement in the M-Pesa menu or app.
  3. Don't hand over goods or send money until the balance shows the payment.
  4. Ignore pressure to act fast.
  5. Save the fake message and the number as evidence.

Frequently asked questions

The message has a real-looking transaction code. Is it genuine?
Codes are easy to copy. Only your balance or statement tells you if the money really arrived.
