What are the signs of a romance scam in Tanzania?
The clearest sign is a request for money, airtime or a mobile money transfer before you have ever met. Before that there is usually a pattern: strong feelings very fast, a reason why the person can never meet or video call, and a story that slowly builds towards a problem only you can solve.
Romance scammers follow a script. They find you on Facebook, Instagram, a dating app or in a WhatsApp group, chat every day and make you feel special. Then come the problems: a hospital bill, a parcel stuck at customs, school fees, a ticket to come to Dar es Salaam to see you.
One sign alone proves nothing. It is the combination, and above all the request for money, that gives it away.
Signs to look out for
- They talk about love or marriage within days.
- They always have a reason not to video call or meet.
- Their photos look like a model, a soldier or a doctor, and the profile is new.
- Their story has small details that change from week to week.
- Sooner or later a crisis appears that only your money can fix.
