Someone recorded a video call with me and now wants money. What do I do?

Do not pay and stop replying. Paying usually leads to more demands. Keep the evidence, block the account, report it to the platform and to the police.

This kind of blackmail often starts with a flirty chat that moves fast to a video call. The person records it and then threatens to send it to your contacts unless you pay by mobile money.

It is not your fault, and you are not alone. Blackmailers count on shame to keep you quiet.

What to do now

  1. Stop the conversation. Do not pay.
  2. Take screenshots of the threats, the profile and any payment numbers.
  3. Report and block the account on the platform.
  4. Make your social media private for a while.
  5. Report it at the nearest police station of the Uganda Police Force.

Frequently asked questions

What if they really send it?
Some do not, because they move on to easier targets. If it is sent, report the post to the platform so it is removed, and tell the police.
