A company wants my ID copy and bank details before the interview. Is that safe?

No. A real employer asks for your ID copy and bank details when you sign a contract, not before an interview. Asked early, they are used for identity theft: loans, accounts and SIM cards opened in your name.

Fake vacancies exist only to collect ID copies, payslips, proof of address and bank details. Some then ask for a "verification deposit" into an account to check that it works. Treat your ID number like your bank PIN.

What to do

  1. Send nothing until you have an offer in writing from a company you have confirmed exists.
  2. Confirm the company through its official website and switchboard, not the recruiter's number.
  3. Never do a "verification deposit" or share banking login details or OTPs.
  4. If you already sent your ID, consider registering for protective registration with the Southern African Fraud Prevention Service and watch your credit record.
  5. Check the recruiter's number and email for scam reports.

Frequently asked questions

What can someone do with just my ID number?
With your ID number and a few more details they can apply for credit, open accounts and do SIM swaps in your name. Guard it.
