Someone asked me to forward a code sent to my phone. Why is that dangerous?
Because that code is the key to your account. With it, someone can take over your WhatsApp, reset your MoMo or log into your email, and then scam your contacts in your name.
The request often comes from a friend's hijacked account: 'I sent you a code by mistake, please send it to me.' Once you send it, your account is theirs too.
No real company, friend or agent needs a code that was sent to your phone.
What to do
- Never forward a code, even to a friend.
- Turn on two-step verification in WhatsApp.
- If you shared a code, reset the account and warn your contacts.
- Call the friend on their usual number to check.
- Report the account in the app.
Frequently asked questions
- My WhatsApp was taken over. What now?
- Re-register WhatsApp with your number, turn on two-step verification and warn your contacts that messages asking for money are not from you.
