How can I tell if a Facebook profile is fake?
Open the profile and look at its history: a real account has years of posts, tagged photos from other people, friends who comment and a life that makes sense. A fake account is usually new, has few friends, only a handful of photos that look professional, and nobody else in them.
Fake accounts are built fast. The scammer copies photos from someone else, picks a name, adds a few hundred friends by sending requests, and starts chatting. Details are often missing or inconsistent: lives in Manila, studied abroad, works for a company that does not exist.
What to check
- When was the profile created? Very recent, with little activity, is a sign.
- Are there photos where other people tagged the person? Fake accounts rarely have any.
- Reverse image search the profile photo and a few others.
- Do the friends look real, or are they also new accounts with few photos?
- Does the story in the profile match what the person tells you in chat?
- Search the name and username together with "scammer" or "budol".
Frequently asked questions
- The profile has thousands of friends. So it is real?
- Not necessarily. Friends can be bought or collected by sending requests. Look at the quality of the friends, not the number.
