I got an SMS saying I won a prize or a promotion. Is it real?

If you must pay anything to receive a prize, it is a scam. Real promotions do not ask you to send mobile money, a PIN or airtime to claim a prize.

Fake prize messages often use the names of mobile networks, banks or well-known brands. They ask you to call a number or to pay a "processing fee".

What to do

  1. Do not pay anything to claim a prize.
  2. Do not call the number in the SMS.
  3. Check the promotion on the company's official page or with its official customer care.
  4. Delete the message and block the sender.

Frequently asked questions

The SMS has my name in it. Is it genuine?
No. Names and numbers are easy to get. That does not make the message real.
