My phone suddenly lost network. Could it be a SIM swap scam?

It could be. In a SIM swap a scammer gets a new SIM for your number so they receive your codes and can use your mobile money. If your network disappears without reason, contact your provider at once.

Scammers first collect your details, often through a fake call or message, then go to a shop or agent pretending to be you. Once your number works on their SIM, they reset your PIN and move the money.

Acting quickly is what makes the difference.

What to do

  1. Call your provider from another phone or visit a service centre right away.
  2. Ask them to block the line and your mobile money account.
  3. Alert your bank if the number is linked to your account.
  4. Report it at the nearest police station.
