Veritaza

The person asked for a small loan and promised to return it. Should I lend it?

Not to someone you have never met in person. The small loan is a test: if you pay, the scammer knows you are willing and the next request will be bigger. Someone who truly cares about you will not ask you for money before you have even met.

The reasons sound ordinary – a recharge, a bill, a short gap before salary, a child's fee – and the promise to return it is sincere-sounding. Sometimes the scammer even returns the first small amount, so the second, larger request feels safe.

What to do

  1. Say no, clearly and kindly. Watch the reaction: guilt, anger or disappearance tells you what you need.
  2. Do not send "just this once" – there is no such thing in a scam.
  3. Check the person's photos, number and messages before you continue.
  4. If you already lent money and are now asked for more, stop, and report it if the person disappears.

Frequently asked questions

They returned the first loan. Does that mean they are genuine?
Not necessarily. Returning a small amount is a known trick to earn trust before a much bigger request.
