Veritaza

My phone line suddenly stopped working. Could it be a SIM swap?

It could be. If your line suddenly loses service while others around you have network, contact Safaricom from another phone straight away, because a scammer may have moved your number to a new SIM.

With your number, a scammer can receive your M-Pesa and bank codes, reset your WhatsApp and empty your accounts. They often get personal details first through a fake call or a lost ID.

Acting fast is what makes the difference.

What to do

  1. Call Safaricom from another phone and ask if your SIM was replaced.
  2. Ask them to block the line.
  3. Call your bank and ask them to freeze mobile banking.
  4. Check your M-Pesa statement once the line is back.
  5. Report any loss at the police station.

Frequently asked questions

How can I make a SIM swap harder?
Never share your ID details, PIN or codes with callers, and keep your ID safe. Report a lost ID quickly.
