Veritaza

Someone took over my WhatsApp after I shared a code. How do I get it back?

Reinstall WhatsApp, register with your own number and enter the new code you receive: that logs the other person out. Then turn on two-step verification and warn your contacts that someone may ask them for money in your name.

The scam often comes from a friend's hacked account: "I sent you a code by mistake, please forward it." The code was for your own WhatsApp.

Once in, the scammer messages your contacts asking for urgent M-Pesa.

Step by step

  1. Reinstall WhatsApp and verify your number.
  2. Enter the six-digit code you receive by SMS.
  3. Turn on two-step verification with a PIN only you know.
  4. Tell your contacts not to send money to requests from your account.
  5. If you can't get back in, contact WhatsApp support from the app.
