The person only asked for a small amount. Is it still a scam?

It can be, and often is. Scammers start with a small amount because it feels too small to refuse and too small to be a scam; once you have paid, the next request is bigger and the story more urgent. The size of the amount tells you nothing; the fact that a stranger asked does.

A small request is a test of three things: whether you pay, how fast, and through which account. Scammers also send many small requests to many people at once, which adds up for them even if it is nothing to you.

What to do

  1. Treat the first request as the signal, not the amount.
  2. Say no and see whether the relationship survives. If it does not, it was about the money.
  3. Do not "just this once". Once is what the scammer is waiting for.
  4. Check the number and the name: small-request scams often come from numbers already on scam lists.
  5. If you already paid, do not pay again, and save the receipt and the chat.

Frequently asked questions

The person paid me back the small amount. So they are honest?
Paying back a small amount is a known move to earn trust before a large request. Keep watching.
