Veritaza

How do I know if my match on a dating app is a scammer?

A scammer on a dating app usually moves fast: very flattering within days, wants to leave the app for WhatsApp at once, avoids video calls and, sooner or later, brings up money. One sign alone can be innocent, but three or four together are the pattern you should not ignore.

Most scam profiles look better than average: a doctor, an engineer abroad, an army officer, a businessperson who travels a lot. The chat feels warm from day one and the person always has a reason not to meet. The story often ends with an emergency, a customs duty on a gift, or an investment tip that "cannot fail".

Veritaza checks the match's photos, messages, number, email ID and name for warning signs. It cannot catch every scammer – if we find nothing, that is a good sign, but not proof.

Signs to watch for

  1. The photos look like a model or a stock photo, and a reverse image search finds them elsewhere under another name.
  2. The person wants to leave the app for WhatsApp or Telegram in the first few messages.
  3. They say they are abroad, on a ship, on an oil rig or posted far away, and cannot meet or video call.
  4. The affection comes very fast – "my love", future plans, marriage talk – before you have ever met.
  5. Any request for money, gift cards, a recharge, a loan or help with an "investment".

Frequently asked questions

Are paid dating apps safer than free ones?
Not really. Scammers pay for subscriptions too, because the people there are seen as having money. Judge the person, not the app.
What if the person is genuinely shy and just does not like video?
Shyness is real, but a shy person will still agree to a short call once trust has grown. Someone who refuses every time, for months, is hiding something.
