How do I know if a job offer is fake?
A job offer is suspicious when you are asked to pay – a registration fee, training charges, a "security deposit" – or promised a lot of money for very little work. A genuine company does not charge you to hire you.
Fake job offers arrive on WhatsApp, Telegram or social media, often in the name of well-known companies. In the task scam (part-time job scam), you are first paid small amounts for liking videos or rating hotels, then asked to "invest" in bigger tasks – and the money never comes back.
How to check
- Look for the vacancy on the company's official website, or call the number on that website, not the one in the message.
- Search for the company name on the internet together with the words "scam" and "fraud".
- Never pay a registration fee, training charges, a deposit or "task recharge" to start working.
- Be careful with interviews done only over chat and with pressure to accept quickly.
- Check the number and the email ID of whoever made the offer.
Frequently asked questions
- They paid me for small tasks. So is it genuine?
- Not necessarily. Paying small amounts at first is a standard trick to get you to send a bigger amount later.
- A loan app gave me money I did not ask for and now they are threatening me. What do I do?
- Do not pay more and do not give in to threats. Check on the RBI website whether the lender is a registered bank or NBFC, report it on cybercrime.gov.in and call 1930.
