The NRI match asks for money to come to India for the wedding. Is it a scam?

Yes. A person who really has a good job abroad does not need your money for a ticket, a visa fee, a "clearance" or customs duty. The request to send money before the person has even set foot in India is the moment the matrimonial scam shows itself.

The story often starts small – "my card is blocked, can you send a little for the ticket, I will return it on arrival" – and grows: a fine at the airport, a parcel of gifts held at customs, a hospital bill on the way. Each payment is followed by a new problem.

What to do

  1. Do not send anything, not even a small amount, and do not pay any "agent" or "courier".
  2. Ask the person to arrange the trip themselves; a genuine match will.
  3. Reverse image search the photos and check the number and email ID.
  4. Talk to your family before deciding – scammers often ask you to keep the money request secret.
  5. If you already paid, call your bank and 1930 immediately and report it on cybercrime.gov.in.

Frequently asked questions

They sent a photo of the ticket and the parcel receipt. Does that prove it?
No. Fake tickets and courier receipts are easy to make and are part of the script.
