How do I verify an NRI match before marriage?

Verify an NRI match the same way you would someone in India, but insist on more: video calls with the person and their family, proof of the job from the employer, and a meeting in person before any engagement. Distance is exactly what fraudsters rely on, so do not let it lower the standard.

NRI matrimonial frauds take different forms: a person who is already married abroad, someone with a fake job or visa status, or an outright scammer who never intends to marry and just wants money for "tickets" or "documents". Families sometimes rush because the match looks prestigious – that is the trap.

What to check

  1. Ask for the employer's name and check the person on the company website or through its official contact – not a number the person gives you.
  2. Search the full name together with words like "fraud", "cheating" and "FIR", and look at the person's social media history going back years.
  3. Have your family video call the match's family, and ask for a relative in India you can meet.
  4. Ask directly about earlier marriages and relationships, and watch for inconsistent answers.
  5. Do not transfer money, gold or property, and do not sign anything, before meeting in person.

Frequently asked questions

The match wants to marry quickly on a short visit to India. Is that a sign?
Rushing is a common sign. A genuine match will understand that your family needs time to verify.
