What are the signs of a fake Facebook profile?
A fake Facebook profile is usually new, has few friends or thousands of random ones, posts only generic images or quotes, has no tagged photos with real people and no comments from friends or family. The photos are often of a model, a soldier or a religious figure, and the first message quickly leads to WhatsApp.
Facebook fake profiles are used for romance scams, for "your friend needs money" scams using a cloned account of someone you know, and for selling fake products. A cloned account copies a real friend's name and photo and sends a new friend request; check whether you are already friends with that person.
What to look at
- When was the account created and when was the first post?
- Are there photos with other people, tagged by them, with real comments?
- Do the friends look real and connected to the person's claimed city and job?
- Reverse image search the profile picture.
- If it is a friend's name, call that friend before accepting – it may be a cloned account.
Frequently asked questions
- A friend's account messaged me asking for urgent money by UPI. What do I do?
- Call the friend on their number. Cloned and hacked accounts send exactly this message. Do not pay until you have heard their voice.
