The person says "I love you" after a few days of chatting. Is that normal?

It is not normal for someone who has never met you to declare love within days, and in romance scams it is the standard opening, called love bombing. The affection is meant to make you feel special and guilty later, when the money request comes.

A real relationship has ups and downs and the other person has a life of their own. A scammer is available at all hours, agrees with everything you say, calls you their "wife", "husband" or "soulmate" and talks about meeting your family – while never managing to meet you.

How to slow it down

  1. Say you want to take it slowly and see how the person reacts. Irritation or guilt-tripping is a sign.
  2. Ask for a video call. Someone in love with you will want to see you.
  3. Notice whether the person asks real questions about you, or only talks about feelings and their own problems.
  4. Check the person's photos and messages: love-bombing texts are often copied word for word from scripts.

Frequently asked questions

Could it just be a very romantic person?
Yes, it happens. The difference is that a romantic person will happily meet or video call. Watch what they do, not what they write.
