The buyer on Facebook Marketplace wants to pay through a link. Is it safe?
No. To receive money you only need to give your UPI ID or account number; a buyer who sends you a link, a "courier payment" page or an app to "accept" the payment is trying to get your card or bank details, or to make you pay them.
The link often looks like a courier company or a bank page and asks you to enter your card number, CVV and OTP "to receive the amount". Some versions ask you to install a remote-access app so the buyer can "help".
What to do
- Tell the buyer to send money to your UPI ID or account – nothing else.
- Never open a payment link, enter card details or an OTP to receive money.
- Never install an app a buyer sends you.
- If the buyer refuses to pay the normal way, they are not a buyer. Block and report.
Frequently asked questions
- The link was from a well-known courier company. Could it be genuine?
- Courier companies do not pay sellers through links. The page was a copy.
