Do I need to scan a QR code to receive money?

No, never. A QR code is a way to pay someone; scanning it and entering your UPI PIN sends money from your account. Anyone who tells you to scan a code "to receive" a payment, an advance or a refund is trying to take money from you.

This scam targets sellers on OLX, Facebook Marketplace and classified sites. The "buyer" is in a hurry, agrees to the price at once, and sends a QR code or a link to "transfer the advance". The amount shown is sometimes written as a receipt to confuse you.

What to keep in mind

  1. To receive money, you give your UPI ID or number. That is all.
  2. You never scan, never approve and never enter your PIN to receive.
  3. Check your bank app, not a screenshot, to see whether money has arrived.
  4. A buyer who insists on QR codes or links instead of a simple transfer is a scammer – end the chat.

Frequently asked questions

The buyer says the app shows the money will be 'credited' after I scan. Is that a feature?
No such feature exists. Scanning a QR code only pays.
