Can someone take money from my account if they know my UPI ID?
No. Your UPI ID or mobile number lets people send you money and send you requests, but nothing leaves your account unless you approve a payment with your UPI PIN. The danger is being tricked into entering the PIN, sharing an OTP or installing a screen-sharing app.
Scammers know this, so they do not try to "hack" UPI; they talk you into doing the payment yourself – with a fake refund, a collect request, a QR code or a remote-access app. Your UPI PIN and OTP are the keys; the ID is just the address.
What to keep in mind
- Sharing your UPI ID or number to receive money is safe.
- Never share your UPI PIN, OTP, card details or bank login – with anyone, for any reason.
- Never install an app someone asks you to install "to receive money" or "to fix a problem".
- Decline collect requests you did not expect, and never scan a QR code to receive money.
Frequently asked questions
- I shared my UPI ID with someone from a dating app. Is that a problem?
- Not by itself. Be careful if they now send you collect requests, QR codes or links – those are the real risk.
