I received a UPI collect request I did not expect. What should I do?

Decline it. A collect request is a request for your money, and approving it with your UPI PIN sends money out of your account – no matter what the message says about a refund, a prize or a cashback.

Scammers send collect requests with notes like "Refund", "Cashback", "Lottery" or "Payment received", hoping you approve without reading. Sometimes they call at the same time and talk you through "approving the money".

What to do

  1. Read the request: it is asking you to pay, not to receive.
  2. Tap decline. Do not enter your UPI PIN.
  3. Block the sender in the UPI app and report the request if the app offers it.
  4. If you approved one by mistake, call your bank and 1930 right away.

Frequently asked questions

Can I receive money through a collect request?
No. If someone wants to pay you, they send money to your UPI ID. You never need to approve anything or enter your PIN to receive.
