Veritaza

The company asks for a security deposit before joining. Is it a scam?

Yes, almost always. Genuine companies do not take money from candidates – not a security deposit, a registration fee, a laptop deposit or a verification charge. The request for payment is the point of the "job"; after you pay, the joining date keeps moving and then the contact disappears.

The offer often comes from a fake HR email or WhatsApp number using a real company's name and logo. A refundable deposit "as per company policy" sounds reasonable to a fresher – that is why it works.

How to check

  1. Call the company's official number from its website and ask HR whether this offer exists.
  2. Check the email domain: a real company does not send offers from Gmail or a look-alike domain.
  3. Search the company name with "deposit", "scam" and "fraud".
  4. Never pay anything to get a job, and never share bank details before a real joining.
  5. If you paid, call your bank and 1930 and file a complaint on cybercrime.gov.in.

Frequently asked questions

They say the deposit will be refunded with the first salary. Is that done anywhere?
No reputable employer works that way. The refund never comes.
