The person's name on Instagram is different from the name on WhatsApp. Is that a sign?
A nickname or a shortened name is normal; a completely different name or surname, or a name that keeps changing, is a sign that the person is using a fake identity or running several profiles. Ask about it directly and see whether the explanation makes sense.
Scammers juggle many victims and many accounts, and details slip: a different name, a city that changes, a birthday that does not match. Veritaza's check 6 searches the name and the username together with "scam" and "fraud" in news, forums and warning pages.
How to check
- Ask casually why the names differ; a genuine answer is quick and simple.
- Search both names together with the username and the words "scam" and "fraud".
- Compare other details – city, age, job – across the profiles.
- Check the mobile number and the email ID for warning signs.
Frequently asked questions
- The WhatsApp name is in a different language or script. Is that a sign?
- It can simply be the person's own language. Look at whether the rest of the story fits, and ask.
