How do I check if a recruiter on LinkedIn or Naukri is genuine?
Verify the recruiter through the company, not through the recruiter: find the company's official website and contact, and confirm that the person works there and that the vacancy exists. A real recruiter uses a company email, has a profile with history and colleagues, and never asks for money.
Fake recruiters are common on LinkedIn, Naukri and WhatsApp. They collect documents and bank details, charge "processing fees", or lead into task scams. Some clone real recruiters' profiles, so the name may be genuine while the person is not.
How to check
- Look at the recruiter's profile: how old is it, do colleagues from the same company interact with it?
- Check the email domain against the company's official website.
- Search the recruiter's name and number with "scam" and "fraud".
- Ask for the job on the company's official careers page and apply there.
- Refuse any fee and do not share Aadhaar, PAN or bank details until you have a verified offer.
Frequently asked questions
- The recruiter messaged me on WhatsApp first. Is that normal?
- Some genuine recruiters do, but then move to email and official channels quickly. One who stays only on WhatsApp is a warning sign.
